Two Defence Industrial Corridors to be set up in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, says Shripad Naik
Government has decided to set up two Defence Industrial Corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu which would cover Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) needs.
- The Finance Minister in his budget speech (2018-19) had announced setting up of two Defence Industrial Corridors in the country.
Cabinet approves merger of NIMH with ICMR-NIOH
Union Cabinet has approved the merger of National Institute of Miners’ Health with Indian Council of Medical Research and National Institute of Occupational Health.
JATAN: Virtual Museum software for Digitization of Archaeological Museum
JATAN: Virtual Museum software has been developed by Human Centres Design and Computing Group, C-DAC, Pune, Maharashtra for the Digitization of Archaeological Museum.
- JATAN is used for creating digital collections in various museums and digital archival tools that are used in background for managing National Portal.
RIL’s becomes top-ranked Indian company in Fortune Global list
Reliance Industries ltd has jumped 42 places to become the highest-ranking Indian firm on the Fortune Global 500 list.
- Reliance Industries replace Indian Oil Corporation. RIL’s present ranking in the list 106 and IOC’s ranking in the list 117.

ADB sanctions Rs 1925 Cr for power projects in Tripura
Asian Development Bank has sanctioned Rs 1925 Cr project for up-gradation of power generation and distribution in Tripura.
- The project has been sanctioned for upgrading capacity of 63 MW Rokhia Project to 120 MW at an estimated cost of over 699 crore rupees and modernising Gumti Hydro Electric Project at an estimated cost of nearly 1225 crore rupees.
RBI names Kanungo to run monetary policy portfolio
Reserve Bank of India has assigned deputy governor B.P. Kanungo to run the monetary policy portfolio and forecasting department. After the exit of Viral Acharya, Kanungo has become the 6th member of the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee.
- Now, all the three deputy governors N S Vishwanathan, B P Kanungo and M K Jain have been made responsible for 12 departments each.

India jumps five notches to rank 52nd in Global Innovation Index 2019
India has jumped five notches to rank 52nd in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2019 of 129 countries released in New Delhi. India improved its ranking from 81st five years ago to 57 last year.
- It is released by World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).
- The top 10 countries in GII 2019 ranking are Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, the Netherlands, Britain, Finland, Denmark, Singapore, Germany and Israel.
- For the first time, the GII launch was hosted by India, which uses the GII in creative ways to strengthen its policy framework for innovation at both the national and regional levels.

Virat Kohli maintains number one spot in ICC Test Rankings
India skipper Virat Kohli has retained his number one position in the latest ICC Test batsmen’s rankings.
- Kohli, who last featured in India’s 2-1 Test series win over Australia, is sitting on 922 points. New Zealand’s Kane Williamson (913) is second and Cheteshwar Pujara (881) third in the rankings.
- In the team rankings, India remains in the first place followed by New Zealand (2) and South Africa (3) with England (4) and Australia (5) rounding up the top five.
- In the bowlers’ list, two Indians feature in the top 10 with Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin holding the sixth and 10th spot respectively.
Abhay, Tanvi win Bengal Open squash titles
Abhay Singh of Tamil Nadu and Tanvi Khanna clinched the men’s and women’s titles respectively in the sixth Bengal Open squash tournament.
Nuwan Kulasekara announces retirement from international cricket
Sri Lanka pacer Nuwan Kulasekara has announced retirement from international cricket. Kulasekara is known for swinging the ball both way and is the third-highest ODI wicket-taker for Sri Lanka.

Ajay Bhalla appointed as Home Secretary
Ajay Kumar Bhalla has been appointed Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
- Bhalla will take over as Home Secretary from incumbent Rajive Gauba. Bhalla is currently serving as Power Secretary.
Priti Patel appointed UK’s first Indian-origin home secretary
Priti Patel, an ardent Brexiteer who was among the most vocal critics of Theresa May’s Brexit strategy, took charge as Britain’s first Indian-origin home secretary as part of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s top team.

Prime Minister also announced a museum for all former Prime Ministers of India, and invited their families to share aspects of their lives.

Income Tax Day
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and all field offices observed and celebrated the 159th Income Tax Day i.e. Aaykar Diwas on 24th July, 2019.
- It was on 24th July, 1860 that Income Tax was introduced for the first time in India by Sir James Wilson to compensate for the losses incurred by the British regime during the first war of independence against British Rule. This is why 24th July is observed as the Income Tax Day.
